Britons in Spain Urged to ‘be Aware’ of Fake Police and More Amid Fresh Crime Warning

Holidaymakers heading to Spain should be aware of some potential safety risks and disruptions.

The FCO has given advice on how to stay safe abroad.

It warned holidaymakers to be aware of street crime and fake police.

It said: “Take care of your passports, money and personal belongings, particularly when collecting or checking in luggage at the airport, and while arranging car hire.

“Do not carry all your valuables in one place. Keep a photocopy or scanned copy of your passport somewhere safe.

“Make sure your accommodation has adequate security.

“Lock all doors and windows at night, or when out. If concerned about the security of your accommodation, speak to your travel operator or the property owner.”

The Government has shared a fresh update for those driving in Spain.

Britons can be subject to fines if driving in a ‘zonas de bajas emisiones’ – Spain’s low emission zones.

British tourists need to register their cars in advance if they plan to drive in these areas.

The zones can be found in Madris, Barcelona, Seville, Zaragoza, Cordoba, A coruna, Pontevedra and Pamplona.

When driving abroad, it is also important to be aware of potential scams.

The FCO advised Britons to have their wits about them when approached while in their cars. It said: “When driving, be wary of approaches by people posing as police officers in plain clothes travelling in unmarked cars.

“In all traffic-related matters, police officers will usually be in uniform. All police officers, including those in plain clothes, carry official ID.

“Unmarked police vehicles have a flashing electronic sign on the rear window which reads Police (‘Policía’) or Civil Guard (‘Guardia Civil’), and may use blue flashing lights.”

Genuine police officers will only ask you to show them your documents and will not ask for your bag or wallet.”
